This Course is designed to give an overall view of the skills, and knowledge required by stewards at public events

 

Successful candidates will achieve 3 credits at level 2   awarded by  the Open College Network

 

Course content

• Introduction and course aims.  An outline of the course which will give candidates an opportunity to meet  each other and the trainer.  Candidates will be able to discuss their prior experience and discuss what they expect from the course

• Specific duties of a steward.  This section will enable candidates to explore the do’s and don’ts of stewarding and learn about the responsibilities of a steward with particular emphasis on working as part of a team.

Implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act – keeping yourself and members of the public safe.  This section will include a brief look at the Health and Safety at Work Act and Personal Safety Equipment

How to identify and deal with an emergency in an open and closed venue.  Stewards will learn the organisation’s emergency procedures and how to access and use emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers and locate personnel specific to emergencies such as First Aid operatives and the security staff.  Candidates will also learn the organisations reporting and recording procedure for emergencies.

Identifying and dealing with hazards.  Candidates will be given an opportunity to identify hazards and to discuss measures that could be taken to prevent accidents. Candidates will also learn the organisations reporting and recording procedure for accidents.

Crowd control procedures in open and closed venues.  Candidates will be given an understanding of procedures for controlling the entry and exit of people from venues.

Dealing with members of the public.  Candidates will have an opportunity to look at the basic principles of customer care and to address such issues as disabilities, equal opportunities, dealing with lost and found items and children.

 

It is recommended that those undertaking this course also complete the fire safety, conflict management and team supervision courses
